In the wilds of Kansas

Well, it's still DAY SEVEN and we've driven across half of Missouri and a large part of Kansas. We are now in a Motel 6 in Hays, KS, just about the most minimal accommodations we've ever had. Oh well. On our way across Kansas we stopped at the Konza Prairie Research Natural Area, hoping to be able to take a nice walk. It was over 60 degrees, a very lovely day. We thought it would be out-of-the way and empty of people but it is very close to Manhattan, KS and Kansas State U, and wow, there were scores of cars in the parking lot. So we saw a lot of people on the trail, families and students, a very diverse group, and very friendly. It was a very nice walk through a mix of old-growth prairie and the vestiges of early settler's cultivation. It was not as flat as one might expect in central Kansas. It was a 2.5 mile walk - perfect for what we needed and had time for. Here are some scenes:
