Trip to Maine

Last week we went to Maine to visit Jim and Mary in Owl's Head. We left on Wednesday, after my physical therapy session for my shoulders, arrived at Jim and Mary's at about suppertime, and returned on Friday. Mary has a beautiful garden and her asperagus is coming in big-time, so we enjoyed very fresh asperagus almost every meal. One reason for going at this time was for a community theater production Thursday evening of Shakespeare's As You Like It, in Belfast, ME. Belfast is about a 45-minute drive north of Owl's Head. We drove up in Jim's new Prius! Nice car. Most of their local driving is within the Prius' 30-mile electric-only range, so they use very little gas. We had to use a little on our round-trip to Belfaat. It was very cool weather while there and the theater was out-of-doors, and even though we dressed warmly, we got sort of cold. The production was well done and a lot of fun - they set the play in the 1960s, emphasizing the hippie culture, so the Forest of Arden was a hippie commune. It worked well! We had forgotten what a delightful play As You Like It is. Friday on the way home, we stopped in Waldoboro, and met Phil McKean at a picnic table outside the UCC church and had a little lunch together while we visited. Deborah is now a resident at Cory Hill in Camden - her Alzheimer's has progressed to a point where she requires more care than Phil can give, even with some part-time female caregivers coming in. So she was not able to join us, and we missed her. Below are photos of the picnic table where we met Phil, a photo of Mary's garden, a shot of her beautiful pot rack and two from the theater production.
Today, May 24th, is the 23rd anniversary of Shirley's death. We went to Walker Farm and got geraniums and decorated both Shirley's and Betsey's graves. In about a week, the iris's planted on Shirley's grave will be blooming - that will be beautiful.
