Ashland, WI

Tonight we are in the Crest Motel in Ashland, WI. Ashland is at the top of Wisconsin, on Lake Superior, about 60 miles or so from Duluth, MN. We had considered spending the night in Duluth, but it was after 7:30pm when we got to Ashland, and I decided I wanted a little more time to look around and do this blog. So we stopped here.

Ashland is the home of Northland College, one of those small, private colleges that has found its nitch and manages not only to survive, but to thrive. Northland was founded originally by Congregational missionaries, who brought education to the "God-forsaken Wasteland" of northern Wisconsin in 1892. You have to hand it to them - they were dedicated to education and they managed to found a lot of very good colleges.

Northland's nitch today is environmental, ecological and sustainability studies. It takes advantage of its location near a million acres of national forest and Lake Superior, esp. the Apostle Islands. It is an attractive little college, with about 600 students. Check out their website.
